Learn the importance of managing your day and tasks

Why is task setting an important part of your day? 

Working in real estate provides the flexible hours that many covet. But, as we all know, it’s not always as glamorous as it seems. Working largely out of the office, real estate agents often find it tough to organize the day and cross items off on their task list.

Learning to manage your time and prioritize tasks is important because it allows you to provide a high level of customer service, close more sales, and grow your business. Without organization, tasks begin to slide through the cracks and clients wait too long for a phone call. Long-term business development ideas forever get pushed off to next week – or next month.

While it can be challenging, it’s definitely not impossible. Since you might not naturally have a lot of structure in your day, create your own. Fortunately, there are plenty of tools and programs out there to help you do it.

What Do I Need to Do to Manage My Day and Tasks?

1 – Have Goals

Without goals, it’s tough to move toward it. Start your day or week with clear goals for the determined timeframe. What do you want to accomplish? Once you answer this question, you can start to take actions toward accomplishing them.

2 – Organize Your Day by Strategic and Operational Tasks

Our brains function differently according to the type of task. Some of our tasks involve long-term planning (strategic) and some involve short-term implementation (operational). Separate these tasks, as the operational tasks are often higher priority, while strategic tasks can often be taken care of later.

3 – List

Whatever format you choose to use – whether it be a CRM like AgentBright or good old-fashioned pen and paper – make lists. Make checklists for listing a property, the client information process, and, of course your daily to-do list. Cross things off as you go so you get the satisfaction of finishing a job and moving on to the next.

4 – Knock Out Time Consuming Tasks in the Morning

While some may have a different opinion on this, the consensus is that people tend to work more effectively in the morning, and taper off in the afternoon. It’s often helpful to book your important and time consuming tasks before noon, and use the late afternoon to shred papers, make a few calls, and set up meetings for the next day.

5 – Time Block

If you don’t do this, you’ll end up multitasking ineffectively without really digging into – or finishing – anything. Instead of jumping from one thing to another, block out fixed chunks of time in your day for certain tasks, activities, or projects and stick to it. Do whatever you need to do to focus: put your smartphone on silent, close your other browsers, set a timer – the list goes on.
